Our certified optometrists are able to check on people of all ages including children aged 8 and below.
The Paediatric Eye Exam is able to tell if your child have good eyesight, eye functions as well as eye health. Most common eye problems with children is myopia, astigmatism, squint and Amblyopia (Lazy eye).
A young child that is suffering from bad vision is often not able to voice out or differentiate blurry and clear vision as they would think that their flawed vision is a normal thing. This is because they may not have grasp the concept of being able to correct vision with spectacles or contact lenses. Therefore, squinting or rubbing their eyes is a main indicator of a potential eye problem.
The Paediatric Eye Examination differs from an Adult Full Eye Examination as the tests performed are more suitable for children in terms of comfort and fun. Many of our paediatric tests are mini games for your children to play, this engages them and helps us to better understand their eye condition. For children who are not yet able to speak or read, we use symbols and shapes to engage them.
Assessment for the clarity of distance and near eyesight. This gives us a general view of how well your child sees. For young children who are unable to read and say alphabets, we provide shapes and symbols.
We check the eye alignment for any deviations that may cause discomfort in vision. It allows us to detect any squint (heterotropia) or dissociation of eyes when not focusing (heterophoria).
To allow ourselves to keep our vision single when reading or viewing our phones, we use our ability to converge. We assess that ability to ensure you do not experience headaches or double vision.
When using our eyes to look at near objects and keeping them clear. We focus our eyes with our internal lenses which is known as accommodation. We will assess this to ensure you keep near objects clear.
We unconsciously depend on your depth perception (3D vision) when moving around especially during sports or walking down the stairs. An impaired depth perception may cause a person to lose balance easily. We engage your child by playing a game with them while we perform this test.
We assess colour vision to determine is you have any colour deficiencies. From the type of colour deficiency to the severity. Colour blindness is a relatively common and hereditary eye disease, a child may carry the recessive trait if he has the family history of colour blindness.
Our pupils react to light by constricting (closing) and dilating (opening) to control the amount of light that enters the eye. They tell us how well the nerves are from your eyes to your brain.
We perform checks on the full frontal of your eye which includes: cornea, eyelids, eye lashes, the tear film, crystalline lens and the white area of your eye. We look out for any inward pointing eyelash (Trichiasis) or inward folding of eyelid (Entropion) in children with not yet fully developed eyelids.
We check for the dominant eye and the non-dominant eye to assess whether your child works both eyes equally. Neglection of either or both eyes can lead to Amblyopia (Lazy eye).
We assess the exterior eye muscles by examining the movement to see if there is any restriction at all gazes. A restriction of eye movement at a certain gaze could mean a possible muscle weakness due to a brain defect.
Everyone is unique and have different lifestyles. We will provide a detailed explanation of your child’s eyes catered to them. Possible treatment and correction varies case to case basis.
We provide a full detailed report on what we examined after the examination.
Children’s eyes are still developing, and eye conditions or even minor vision issues can emerge quickly. A comprehensive eye exam can detect and diagnose visual problems before they become more serious and cause permanent vision loss.
Not all vision problems are easily recognizable. Sometimes children don’t realize that they are not seeing correctly because they don’t know what “normal” vision is like.
Some common signs and symptoms that your child will exhibit that require further checks include:
